Semiotic Disease

Art, Science, Reason... Meaning

Message of the Day

"All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him. "

Hello

This is for people to introduce yourselves. The forum here is for you to talk about anything you like. I will probably not moderate it, but in extreme circumstances I might have to.

Fourth of July at Indiana, PA

July 4, 2009 from 6pm to 9pm
I'm going to drink beer and watch the explosions from a roof top or parking garage somewhere in Indiana, PA. The fireworks are launched from the Indiana Fairgrounds and can be seen from all over the lower part of campus around eberly. Last year I watched them from the parking garage. It was fun.

Hello, World!

Semiotic Disease is something I thought of when I was reading William Gibson's short story "The Gernsback Continuum". It's been so long I don't remember if Gibson actually used the phrase "semiotic disease", but it seems to describe what the main character in the story goes through, as he is so infected with pop culture he starts to hallucinate. This blog is going to be my thoughts, ideas and fun things I find…See More

Situation in Iran

Most of you are familiar with what the media calls the "cyberwar" in Iran. I prefer the term "information war", but who am I to tell the media how to sell more papers?

From what I can tell, people in Iran have been getting through their government's internet filtering by twittering through Tor (using the same methods I outlined in the previous post). At least, that's the communication that gets the most press coverage. If not for the… Continue

Australian SecondLifers: Please Don't Go!

I spent some time in SecondLife last night going to Australian sims, talking to Australians about an impending ban of SecondLife in Australia. From what I gather, the bill in question still has to be voted on. Australians seem split as to if it will pass or not, and even if the bill does pass if it will be applied to… Continue
